My decision was coupled with an upgrade to the iPhone iOS and needing to verify that it was allowed to login to the iCloud ID. I must admit that I resisted 2 step verification for a long time but I felt in Sierra that I had to accept that it was the way things were going because of the Verification codes that seem to be generated even when you don't need them - which it seems the app(s) still want before they get any where.
